# The Endurance Plateau: The Capacity Block Every Competitor Skips

> Most climbers jump straight to power. The endurance gap shows up 3 moves from the anchor. An aerobic base block fixes what hangboarding can't.

You send your project in ideal conditions, dry and cool, because you can't afford the pump tax. That's not a beta problem. It's an aerobic base problem. It has a name: the endurance plateau.

## The block nobody wants to do

Carlos V3 periodization starts with capacity for a reason. An aerobic base phase builds the recovery system that lets you try hard moves more than once. Skip it, and your power work sits on a foundation too narrow to hold it.

Most intermediate climbers (V4-V6 range) inherit their endurance from volume climbing alone. When volume drops to focus on strength, capacity fades first. The result: you're stronger on paper but worse on long boulder problems and the second half of sport routes.

## What the base phase actually does

A capacity block prioritizes sub-threshold climbing. Power work gets temporarily reduced or eliminated. You're building the aerobic base that lets you recover between burns, not chasing numbers on the hangboard.

This is boring. It's also non-negotiable if your bottleneck is recovery rate, not raw strength. The work isn't glamorous, but the results compound.

## Who this is wrong for

If you're projecting short, power-dependent boulders and your rest game is already solid, a full capacity block might not be the priority. The periodization logic in Carlos V3 adapts the phase length to your actual bottleneck. You can [find the right program for your current phase](https://climbingbrowser.com/programs?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=endurance-plateau) and see where capacity fits in your cycle.

But if you pump out on moves you're "strong enough" for, the answer isn't more hangboarding.
