Andrea Chiaramello Climbs 7C+

Why it matters

Andrea Chiaramello's ascent of a 7C+ boulder problem is a significant benchmark in the climbing community. For recreational climbers, this achievement emphasizes the importance of strength and technique needed for high-level bouldering. Climbing at this intensity requires a blend of finger strength—vital for gripping small holds—and overall body power, which is essential for executing dynamic movements. Recreational climbers should take note: incorporating targeted strength training can lead to better performance on challenging routes. This could mean prioritizing exercises that enhance grip strength, such as hangboard routines, alongside bouldering sessions that focus on maximum effort problems.

Moreover, this ascent highlights the necessity of effective training tactics. Chiaramello likely follows a structured regimen that balances power work with endurance and recovery strategies. For climbers aiming to improve, understanding the cycle of high-intensity bouts followed by recovery is essential. Engaging in interval training can simulate the physical demands of climbing while ensuring adequate rest to prevent overtraining. This week, climbers should consider implementing intervals—like the 4x4 workout—where they climb four routes back-to-back to develop power endurance, closely mimicking the demands of difficult bouldering problems like Chiaramello’s feat.
